A Brief History

St. Thomas was first organized as St. Paul's Lutheran Church in 1898.  The congregation's first home was in downtown Nyack, in the building on park Street that now houses the Elmwood Playhouse.

In 1958, the congregation moved to its current location on Rte. 59 in Central Nyack.  It was at about this time that it was renamed St. Thomas Lutheran Church.

St. Thomas is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), a church counting some 5 million members across the nation.  As part of the universal Church, and standing in the tradition of the Lutheran Reformation, the ELCA proclaims boldly the gospel of salvation by faith alone in Jesus Christ, while it longs for and works towards the unity of the one, hold, catholic and apostolic Church of Jesus Christ.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At the heart of our life together is the celebration of Holy Communion every Sunday.  We gather to hear the Word of God and to eat and drink at the Lord's Table.  Through these gifts, we are strengthened in faith, hope and love.  From worship, we go out to live as the body of Christ in the world through the lives of service, as we bear witness to our faith.
